Looking for an awesome homemade gift idea? This DIY monogram door hanger is perfect for Mother’s Day, birthdays, housewarmings, and just about everything in between! Plus, you don’t need to be an expert crafter to make one. You just need about 30 minutes of time, $25 in supplies, and preferably a monogram with straight-edged letters. In total transparency, these DIY monogram letters are substantially easier when you’re dealing with horizontal and vertical lines. It’s not impossible to use an S or an ampersand, but it will take significantly more time and patience.

I got all my supplies for under $25 from Michaels and Amazon! Here’s everything you need:

  • 12″ Canvas Letter, $7.99 (Note: There are only 16 characters available online. If you go in-store, you should find the full alphabet plus extra characters. These canvas letters are perfect, since they include an attached triangle hanger and are made of clean white canvas.)
  • X-Acto Knife
  • Fake Flower Bushes (You can find similar bushes to mine here and here, although I shopped in store at Michaels.)
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks

Use your X-Acto knife to carefully cut around the letter. You’re essentially making your own monogram shadowbox. If you’re using this exact canvas letter, you’ll probably need to do this in two steps– first removing the canvas and then cutting into the letter itself. It’s pretty thick, so cutting straight through the letter in one step without damaging it is unlikely. You can see this done in the four photos below!

Once the canvas is off, it’s much easier to jab the X-Acto knife directly into the letter. After you’ve cut enough to fit a few fingers through, you can start manually (albeit gently!) peeling off the cardboard.

Next, either pull or cut the flowers you’d like to use from the plastic stems. I recommend rearranging them in the monogram shadowbox to see how they look before doing any gluing.

Finally, glue all the flowers and greenery in place with a hot glue gun. Be liberal with the glue, especially if you’re giving these DIY monogram letters as gifts. You can also glue any fraying canvas back in place for a cleaner look.

And your DIY monogram door hanger is complete! Mind you, you don’t have to hang it on a door, although that’s my preference. It looks super cute on bookshelves or used as wall decor.
