Southern lifestyle blogger Stephanie Ziajka shows how to make Christmas rice krispie treats that look like mini gift boxes on Diary of a Debutante

You guys… how sweet (literally) are these holiday rice krispie treats?! They make perfect party favors for every occasion (holidays, birthdays, baby showers, etc), and you can fill them with small candies, sprinkles, or anything tiny and edible. I made these for a Christmas party, so I went with red cinnamon Imperials, which (for the record) pair shockingly well with rice krispies. Keep reading to learn how to make your own rice krispie gift boxes! I’m also sharing a step-by-step video tutorial, along with a printable recipe card, at the bottom of this post.

What You Need

Here’s everything you need to make a dozen rice krispie gift boxes–

  • Rice Krispies Treat Sheet– To keep things simple and uniform in height, I used a ready-to-serve Treat Sheet to make my holiday rice krispie treats. If you’d rather make your own, you’ll need two 9×13″ pans of homemade rice krispie treats. Any recipe will work, as long as the final product isn’t particularly difficult to cut through.
  • Square Cookie Cutters (2)– To hollow out the boxes, you’ll need two different-sized square cookie cutters. I used the 3″ and 2.5″ cutters from this set.
  • Chocolate Melting Wafers, Icing, or Fondant– I decided to try using white and pink fondant for the very first time, and it was so easy! For reference, I used the white as-is for the ribbon and bow but mixed the two together to create the pink base for the lid. Also, to keep everything looking clean and uniform, I used this fondant ribbon cutter and this bow-shaped silicone fondant mold to make the gift wrap decorations. Highly recommend this strategy for those of us who aren’t natural dessert decorators! If you aren’t super comfortable with fondant, chocolate melting wafers and/or icing will work well, too. I’ve tried both, and they taste great– they just don’t look as clean.
  • Edible Adhesive (Optional)This edible adhesive is such a fun tool to have in your dessert decorating arsenal! If you decide to use fondant instead of icing or melted chocolate, you’ll likely need this adhesive to keep the ribbons and bows in place. A little goes a long way, too, so you won’t need much.
  • Small Candy or Sprinkles– Grab your favorite small candies or sprinkles to pop inside the box. I used cinnamon Imperials, but M&Ms, Skittles, and Nerds are great substitutes.

You’ll need a rolling pin and a cutting board to assemble these holiday rice krispie treats, as well. Also, if you’re using fondant, you’ll want to sprinkle corn flour, corn starch, icing sugar, or powdered sugar on a flat surface before rolling it out with a rolling pin.

How to Make Rice Krispie Treat Boxes

Here’s how you make one rice krispie gift box (repeat this process to make a dozen)–

1. Assemble the base.

Cut two equal-sized squares out of a Treat Sheet or 9×13″ pan of rice krispie treats. For reference, I used a 3” square cookie cutter from this set. Then, use a slightly smaller cookie cutter (I used a 2.5″ square cutter) to create a hollow square outline and set the inside piece aside for later. Stack the outline on top of the solid square and push down gently to combine and create the base.

2. Create a lid for the box.

Take the leftover inside square you created in Step 1 and roll it out with a rolling pin to make it thinner and wider. Cut out another 3” square to create a lid for the box.

3. Decorate the lid.

Use chocolate melting wafers, icing, or fondant to decorate the lid. I made these for a holiday party with a pink and red theme, so I cut a 3.5” inch square out of light pink fondant, which I created by blending baby pink and white fondant, to cover the lid (one size larger than the box to coat the sides). Then, I used a fondant ribbon cutter and silicone bow-shaped fondant mold to “wrap” the boxes with white ribbon. I had a hard time getting the ribbon/bow to stick, though, so I used this edible adhesive to lock them in place.

These would be perfect as-is for a baby shower for a girl, but you could easily swap the pink for light blue to celebrate a little boy or use yellow or green if you don’t know the gender. You could also go with all white fondant for a bridal shower or use any combinations of festive colors for different holidays, like pink and red for Galentine’s, red and green for Christmas, pastels for Easter, etc.

Just a tip– if any of the pieces start to feel flimsy (particularly the lid), arrange them in a single layer on wax paper and pop them in the fridge for 20 minutes or so. It’ll stiffen them right back up.

4. Pop a surprise inside.

Store the boxes and lids separately in the fridge until you’re ready to use them. Otherwise, they pieces may get sticky and flimsy to function like a legitimate gift box.

Once you’re ready to use them, it’s time for the final touch! Place your favorite holiday candy or sprinkles inside the box, pop on the lid, and enjoy!

More Ideas for Decorating Holiday Rice Krispie Treats

One of my favorite things about these holiday rice krispie treats is that they’re so easily customizable. They’re also great for so many different occasions. For example, even though I made mine for a Christmas party, these pink rice krispie gift boxes would be so perfect for a baby shower for a girl! You could also easily swap out pink and/or white for dozens of different occasions, like–

  • Baby Showers for Boys or Gender Reveals– Light blue fondant or chocolate melting wafers would be perfect for celebrating a little boy! You could also use yellow or another neutral color if you don’t know and/or aren’t revealing the gender.
  • Bridal Showers– How gorgeous would all white fondant (complete with ribbons and bows) be for a bridal shower?! Another fun option would be to use the bride’s wedding colors to honor her upcoming nuptials.
  • Graduations– Celebrate your favorite graduate with rice krispie gift boxes decorated with his/her school colors! You could also ditch the gift wrap theme altogether and add some fun Class of 20XX embellishments on top.
  • Holidays– Celebrating a specific holiday or theme? Use any combinations of festive colors, like pink and red for Galentine’s, red and green for Christmas, pastels for Easter, etc.

Rice Krispie Gift Boxes

Rice Krispie Gift Boxes

Yield: 12 boxes
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

These sweet (pun intended) rice krispie gift boxes make perfect holiday party favors, and they can be filled with your favorite small candies, colorful sprinkles, or anything tiny and edible! Customize yours with different-colored fondant decorations to celebrate baby showers, bridal showers, graduations, and more.

Ingredients

  • Rice Krispies Treat Sheet (or two 9x13" pans of homemade rice krispie treats)
  • 8oz chocolate melting wafers, icing, or fondant
  • 12oz small candies or sprinkles

Instructions

      1. Cut two equal-sized squares out of a Treat Sheet or 9×13″ pan of rice krispie treats. For reference, I used a 3” square cookie cutter. Then, use a slightly smaller cookie cutter (I used a 2.5″ square cutter) to create a hollow square outline and set the inside piece aside for later. Stack the outline on top of the solid square and push down gently to combine and create the base of the box. Repeat until you have a dozen box bases.
      2. Take the leftover inside squares you created in Step 1 and roll them out with a rolling pin to make them thinner and wider. Cut out another 3” square to create a lid for each box.
      3. Use chocolate melting wafers, icing, or fondant to decorate the lids. For reference, I cut a 3.5” inch square out of pink fondant to cover the lid (one size larger than the box to coat the sides) and then used a fondant ribbon cutter and silicone bow-shaped fondant mold to “wrap” the boxes with white ribbon. I had a hard time getting the ribbon/bow to stick, though, so I used this edible adhesive to lock them in place.
      4. Store the boxes and lids separately in the fridge until you’re ready to use them, then place your favorite holiday candy or sprinkles inside the box, pop on the lid, and enjoy!

Notes

Recipe Tips

  1. I love making my own rice krispie treats, but I prefer using a Treat Sheet for this project solely because the sheet is uniform in height. If you make your own, use wax paper to push down and flatten any uneven parts of the tray.
  2. If any of the pieces start to feel flimsy (particularly the lid), arrange them in a single layer on wax paper and pop them in the fridge for 20 minutes or so. It’ll stiffen them right back up!
