The older I get, the less patience I have for grown-out roots. After dying my hair blonde twice during my brief two-year pageant stint, I vowed to never torture my hair with hot rollers and peroxide again. However, even with dark brown hair, I still have roots, and I’m well aware that the grays are going to start rolling in any day now. To be honest, a few hair strands have made their (very unwelcome) debut already. That’s why I wanted to find the best products for concealing both visible roots and gray hair for women of all ages and hair types. After testing out a variety of candidates over the years, my favorite(s) have become EVERPRObeauty Gray Away Root Concealer Spray and Root Touch-Up Magnetic Powder.
Gray Away’s root concealer spray and touch-up magnetic powder continually save me time, energy, and (most importantly) money in-between visits to my hair stylist. Plus, they’re both free of harsh chemicals and dyes, so my hair remains unharmed and undamaged at all times. Gray Away’s formulas aren’t sticky, and unlike many other products I’ve tested in the past, no visible residue is ever left on my hair after use. I can’t say enough good things about either product, but I understand that the decision between a root concealer spray and a touch-up powder is a matter of personal preference. So, I’ve broken down the perks of both the spray and powder application for you below!
EVERPRObeauty Gray Away Root Concealer Spray
Gray Away Root Concealer Spray has become my dirty little secret in can. The Black/Dark Brown color matches my hair perfectly, and with its unique pinpoint applicator, I can target and spray away my roots in seconds. I know spray root concealer products only work well for a certain type of hair, but for thick, long brown hair like mine, I couldn’t ask for a more perfect (and non-sticky) formula.
How to Use It: Before using Gray Away Root Concealer Spray, give it a good shake. Then, hold the can 2-3 inches from your hair. Move your hand continuously back and forth until your roots are evenly covered and concealed. Let it dry for 2-3 minutes before brushing or styling. For best results, only use this spray root concealer when your hair is totally dry. Once it’s dry, the formula is totally sweat resistant, flake-free, and ready to go! If you have any trouble with even distribution, using a comb to lift up your roots can be very helpful!
Gray Away Root Concealer Spray is available in Lightest Brown/Medium Blonde, Light Brown, and Black/Dark Brown for $10.99 at Ulta, Rite Aid, Target, Walgreens, and CVS. Three shades may not seem like much, but the formula features a self-adjusting color technology that successfully matches just about any hair color. No need to waste time or money trying to find your shade!
Lastly, Gray Away Root Concealer Spray washes out with water and shampoo. If you find the formula irritating for your scalp or if you accidentally get some on your forehead or face, it comes right off… unlike so many other root concealers I’ve tried.
EVERPRObeauty Gray Away Root Touch-Up Magnetic Powder
I personally know a lot of women who much prefer a magnetic powder to a spray root concealer, so I was really excited to try this touch-up magnetic powder concealer. I’ve tried a few other similar drugstore products, and I couldn’t stand the extra powder that was left all over my face. With Gray Away, you have so much more control over where the concealer is actually applied. Also, the powder itself is much more compact and easier to carry with you for on-the-go application. Its packaging is so darn cute, too!
How to Use It: This super cute little compact is full of surprises. It takes a little getting used to, but it’s worth it once you do. First, pop off the base of the compact, which is actually a hidden dome sponge applicator that allows for super precise control and coverage in hard-to-reach areas, like the temple and hairline. Using the sponge, sweep a small amount of powder over your clean/dry roots. Start from the scalp and work your way outward. Re-apply as much as you need. If you have any trouble blending the powder, I’ve found that an old dry toothbrush does the trick quite nicely. Try not to use your fingers, since it can get under your fingernails if the powder hasn’t set yet.
Gray Away Root Touch-Up Magnetic Powder is available in Lightest Brown/Medium Blonde, Light Brown, and Black/Dark Brown shades for $8.99 at Ulta, Target, Walgreens, and CVS. I use the Black/Dark Brown shade, and it’s also a perfect match for my hair color. Similarly to EVERPRObeauty Gray Away Root Concealer Spray, this touch-up magnetic powder washes right out with water/shampoo. No damage or dye left behind!

so for this product, when you scatch your head, does it get into your finger nails? because that’s the biggest problem I’ve had with other root-covering products
Sounds interesting! I don’t dye my hair, but if I ever do , I may reference this post if I ever need to touch up my roots!
