Kyle and I are starting to look at houses but realistically, we’re a few years away from homeownership. For right now, renting just makes sense for us. Fortunately for me, we found a cute little bungalow in downtown Columbia with a big enough backyard for the pups and an uncharacteristically spacious mudroom-turned-walk-in-closet. Honestly, as big as it is, I’ve been having the hardest time maximizing its space. I even lugged in a clunky clothing rack and a set of cheap plastic drawers, and the layout still felt cramped and disorganized. We just renewed our lease for another year, so I decided something finally needed to change—preferably without costing an arm and a leg. I came across Rubbermaid® FastTrack® Closet™ Organization System at Lowe’s and, after reading a handful of online reviews, decided to give it a go. Keep reading for my revamped closet reveal!
Closet Reveal: The Before
The size of my closet has never been an issue—it’s the layout. Everything about it is crying out for a refresh. For starters, there’s no space for dresses. I have way too many of them as it is, so I had to bring in a clothing rack. Because the clothing rack is so clunky, it’s hard to reach half my tops, and everything just looks/feels super cluttered.
Then, on the right side of this dividing wall, there are two poorly-spaced shelves and another spot for hanging tops/skirts/not dresses. There’s also no shelving at the top, so my bags and accessories are scattered, well, everywhere.
Rubbermaid FastTrack Closet Installation Process
I was super excited to try a Rubbermaid FastTrack Closet Organization System because I love how easily customizable they are. Different kits, hardware, and wood and wire accessories all work together interchangeably, so you can essentially design and assemble your dream closet without spending thousands of dollars. Honestly, I was a little overwhelmed with options at first, so I really appreciated Lowe’s help with figuring out what would work (and look) best for my space. If you’re feeling that way, too, use this handy online Rubbermaid Design Tool to help jumpstart the design process.
The DIY installation was a big plus. I love that the FastTrack wall mount kits are customizable and easy to install without additional cutting, which is way out of my home improvement comfort zone. If you’ve got the right tools and layout in mind, you can knock out the installation in a couple hours.
Some of the Rubbermaid FastTrack Closet accessories I was most excited to try were the wire sliding baskets and wood drawer units. I love that all their closet systems are modular, so you can move things around if you decide you prefer one layout over another. You can also add more accessories later on, which is great because I already want more drawers.
I found everything for my closet system in the Storage and Organization department at Lowe’s. For those of y’all who prefer shopping online, Rubbermaid FastTrack products are also available at Lowes.com. If you do check them out online, use this fun Rubbermaid Design Tool to help get started!
Closet Reveal: The After
Here she is! I honestly couldn’t be happier with how my Rubbermaid FastTrack Closet Organization System turned out, y’all. Just looking at the much needed top shelf organization makes me smile.
As predicted, these wire sliding baskets are pretty awesome. I love how they help keep my shorts, pants, and sweatshirts organized. I’m also using a wood drawer unit to hold my bathing suits and swim covers.
I also love that I finally have space to hang dresses. No more clunky clothing rack! Truthfully, I intentionally made it a little compact in order to force myself to donate the ones I don’t wear. I’m happy to report that it worked like a charm.
I also love that I’ve got two rods in place of the awkwardly-spaced shelving on the right. In the future, I may try and add a few more wood drawers or sliding wire baskets here, as well.
Lastly, no spring refresh is complete without an honest-to-goodness closet purge. Honestly, one of the best things about this whole closet revamp was that it forced me to get rid of all the stuff I don’t wear. It also forced me to finally separate my warm weather and cold weather clothing. Positive changes all around!
Oh, and if you’re interested in organizing your home, there’s a fun FastTrack Closet Instant Win & Sweepstakes going on from May 15th to June 15th! 3 Grand Prize winners will each win a $1,000 FastTrack Closet, 50 First Place winners will each win a $100 Lowe’s Gift Card, and 130 Second Place winners will each win a $50 Lowe’s Gift Card.
