There is just such a magical aura in Washington, DC. Its history, charm, and energy are palpable from the second your plane lands to the moment it takes back off again. During my most recent trip to visit S, we were only able to spend one day in the heart of the city, so we made sure it was jam-packed with all the mandatory stops. First and foremost, we stopped for Vanilla Blackberry seasonal lattes– aka caffeinated perfection— at Ebenezers Coffeehouse. Why is this place so awesome? Ebenezers is a quaint and fully operational coffeehouse that seeks to serve “coffee with a cause” to the community on Capital Hill. They’re owned and operated by National Community Church, and all profits go towards community outreach projects.
And what would coffee be without I Love D.C. cookies?
After we were fueled with caffeine and sugar, it was time to fulfill one of S’ lifetime dreams– sipping Ebenezers coffee on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial; and that we did. We also had a commemorative photoshoot with the Washington Monument in the background to document the whole dream-coming-true experience.
Next thing I knew, I somehow ended up on NBC News. Although the reporter’s questions were centered around the monuments and various political figures in history, my main concern was whether or not my conspicuous red raincoat, which was tied around my waist in a 6th grade fashion, would show up in the frame.
A trip to the city would obviously not be complete without stopping by The White House. Since Secret Servicemen apparently don’t always do their jobs, national security added an extra fence to the perimeter, so I couldn’t get an unblocked view. Regardless, I stared at my future residence from a 6-foot double barrier distance with a happy and ambitious heart.
We stopped at Old Ebbitt Grill for lunch and cocktails, as is S+S tradition. It’s conveniently located right by The White House, so Old Ebbitt is a fabulous {and delicious} pit stop to recover from the DC heat and herds of random strangers who haven’t familiarized themselves with the concept of personal space.
After lunch we were in full-blown exploration mode, hopping from the Reflection Pond to Capital Building, which was not-photo-ready due to construction, to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.
To conclude an as-close-to-perfect-as-possible afternoon, we stopped at Greenhill Winery & Vineyards in Loudoun County for some authentic Virginia vino and a scenic backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. At one point in my life, I will live on a vineyard. Just breathtaking.
