As a pale Polish princess who was diagnosed with Junior Melanoma in 9th grade, I take sun protection pretty darn seriously. The sun, although you gotta love it, is more dangerous to your overall health and beauty than most know, and there are ways to protect your youthful loveliness beyond a good SPF and beach umbrella.
I found this month’s Target Beauty Box particularly helpful in pre and post sun protection, so here are 6 sun care products and beauty hacks than can help you stay safe and look fabulous while doing it. Photography by HBJ Photography; outfit details here.
BEFORE:
Olay Active Botanicals Moisturizing Toner:
Olay’s non-drying toner is best used after cleansing to prep skin for a day lotion (or even a night cream). Its botanical formula is formulated with Snow Mushroom, which is a naturally derived botanical traditionally used by for centuries by the beautiful women in China. Olay’s Active Botanicals Moisturizing Toner, formulated with the famous Snow Mushroom, which is known for its powerful ability to hold up to 500 times its weight in water, replenishes lost moisture to leave skin soft, fresh, and ready for the next step in your daily regimen.
Olay Active Botanicals Moisturizing Day Lotion:
Olay Active Botanicals Moisturizing Day Lotions lightweight formula infuses 24-hour hydration and maintains skin’s natural moisture, leaving skin super soft. Also formulated with Snow Mushroom, you’ll experience immediate hydrating benefits with the power of their natural hydra complex-Snow Mushroom super formula. Keep in mind that it doesn’t contain any SPF, so a facial sunscreen is also necessary to protect your soft skin from the harmful heat rays.
Fekkai Pré -Soleil Hair Radiance and Protection Mist:
It doesn’t matter the temperature; when the sun shines, those rays can wreak havoc on your hair. Fekkai Pré-Soleil Hair Mist provides sun protection for hair from damaging threats like color fade and dehydration with a UV filter that acts like an invisible shield, all while adding a radiant, sun-kissed shine. You can use before and throughout the day in the sun to make your hair day beach-chic.
DURING:
Crest 3D White 1 Hour Express Whitestrips:
Nobody said that dental care isn’t important! Pop one of these babies in while you’re laying out and get fabulous results that can last up to 3 months. These Whitestrips use Advanced Seal technology for convenience and anti-slippage, so you don’t need to worry about swimming with plastic Hydrogen Peroxide falling out of your mouth and floating to innocent bystanders.
CoverGirl LashBlast Super Sizer Mascara:
So you’re on the beach with your man crush, complete with all your appropriate tools for sun protection, and your mascara starts to smear. Not cute. LashBlast Super Sizer Mascara by CoverGirl is waterproof, gives your lashes 400% more volume, and even transforms small lashes into voluminous gems. It’s opthalmologically-tested, completely inexpensive, and suitable for those who wear contact lenses.
AFTER:
Clairol Hair Food Moisturizing Hair Mask:
Last but not least– my favorite all the sun care beauty hacks: “Hair Food.” Hair Food Moisture is the perfect way to provide rich moisture protection for smooth, manageable hair damaged by chlorine, coloring, or excess sun exposure. It’s inspired by pampering and relaxing ingredients known to hydrate and condition the hair, and it smells lovely with an infused honey and apricot fragrance.
How do you stay safe and beautiful for a day in the sun? Any other worthy sun care products or beauty hacks I should know about?
Both of my parents have had melanoma so I am very precautionary about my skin as well! I have never tried Olay products for sun protection but will look into that now. PS – I love your bathing suit top in these photos!

Such a great post! I’m always super careful about my skin because I burn very easily!
I had no idea Target had beauty boxes! What great products, too. I am a recovering “tanaholic” and really am working on taking sun safety seriously – glad to see you are too! 🙂
I am so careful with sunblock! I didn’t know they had beauty boxes I need to check them off!

I’m allergic to most sunscreen, so finding one that is okay for my skin has always been a hassle! Thanks for sharing these products, and I didn’t know Target had beauty boxes either!! Thank goodness I have a Target about 5 minutes away from my apartment. I’ll definitely be stopping by today to find out more info!

I have darker skin so I don’t tend to burn, but that makes it even easier for me to forget about sun care. I’ve been pretty good with the SPF of my skin, but I never thought to protect my hair! It would explain a lot of the damage it sustained this summer haha. Thanks for sharing about your beauty box! The hair mist sounds like it would be super helpful for me!

How fun is it that Target now has beauty boxes?! And you’re so right, natural pale is beautiful!
Great tips Stephanie. I had no idea Target even had beauty boxes but it seems so great. I am so serious about taking care of my skin in the sun, I don’t care about being tan anymore!
Love these tips! They are perfect reminders of how to spend time in the sun and still be good to your skin!

I’ve always been really paranoid about Melanoma. I don’t think people realize how frequently people are diagnosed and how scary it really is. Sun protection is a must! I had no idea Target had a beauty box! I will be checking this out ASAP!

I’m Polish, too!! I feel you on the paleness, chica. I also feel you on a love for Target, because their beauty boxes are FABULOUS. Sun protection has to be a #1 priority…I got burned the other day and I regret it so much!

As We Stumble Along
Love love your kini! I use a tinted moisturizer on my face everyday and it has SPF. That’s a great way to start. 🙂
