I never thought, in my wildest dreams, that I’d be asked twice to sing the National Anthem for the Orlando Solar Bears. I genuinely thought it was one of those “once in a lifetime” opportunities, where a little girl gets to perform for the team she’s idolized as a native Orlandoan since she was 6. Well, my wildest dreams came true, and I was asked back to perform on my favorite fall holiday, Halloween!
I thought about wearing my crown and sash, but where’s the fun in that? Instead of the overdone Holly Golightly (my second choice) and cliché princess costumes, I opted for a classy version of Minnie Mouse. I say classy because I have a rather tawdry tutu version sitting in my closet from when I was 21 and frequented degenerate college bars, but I decided full coverage is both more appropriate for the venue and more appropriate for a lady of any age.
The Amway has the most amazing sound system, and after my last Anthem disaster with Orlando City Soccer and ESPN Wide World of Sports’ karakoke-quality microphone, I was thrilled to be back on the ice. The eye candy wasn’t too bad either. We creeped. Hard.
After about 45 minutes of playing around in the Amway’s Green Room, it was time to perform. I apparently don’t photograph well in live action, but nevertheless, the Orlando Solar Bear’s photographer, Kevin Stokes, did an amazing job capturing my moment. Thank you so much, Kevin!
You didn’t think I’d leave you without a video, did you?
After all was said and done, it was Halloween, and Michele and I got to hang out with the most amazing Solar Bears team backstage. We somehow talked them into taking multiple Green Room and elevator selfies with us, scored fabulous seats at the game, and ate/drank as much as any real hockey fan should.
Dinner of champions.
Honestly, this Halloween goes down as one of my favorites. I was truly bummed that I wasn’t able to spend it in DC due to multiple Park Avenue Fashion Week events happening in Orlando, but the Solar Bears made me feel so special, so welcome, and so appreciated, which was the best feeling any girl could’ve ask for… especially dressed as Minnie Mouse on Halloween!
I hope to grace their rink again next season!
How awesome is this! Love your minnie costume 🙂 And you have a beautiful voice! No wonder they asked you to sing twice!
