There are two groups of people I find most challenging to shop for– teenagers and Secret Santas. Teen preferences can change on a dime, and Secret Santa gift exchanges usually come with tight price limits, minimal information, and the pressure to pick something thoughtful for someone you may not know very well. It’s basically a recipe for overthinking for Type A gift givers like me.

Fortunately, after years of office parties, neighborhood gatherings, and Friendsmas celebrations, I discovered a simple tool that makes Secret Santa gifting way easier: a Secret Santa survey. I’m serious, y’all… I don’t know how I managed without one. A short and sweet gift exchange questionnaire helps narrow down likes, dislikes, interests, allergies, colors, and even inside-joke potential. And because everyone fills out the same sheet, no one feels awkward sharing what they actually want or would enjoy. It takes the guesswork out of gifting completely.

If you want a polished ready-to-use option, I created a printable Secret Santa survey and coordinating gift tags in my Etsy shop (Surprise! I have an Etsy shop!). They’re cute, festive, and totally workplace-friendly, and they make organizing your exchange so much easier. Once you have everyone’s survey answers in hand, choosing the perfect gift becomes shockingly easy.

Still, if you’re feeling stuck, whether you know your Secret Santa well or barely at all, here are some thoughtful Secret Santa gift ideas at every price point (even the tricky ones) to help get you started–

Secret Santa Gift Ideas under $5

Small gifts can be the toughest, but they’re also the most fun because they invite creativity. With a $5 limit, presentation is everything. Pairing an inexpensive item with a pretty bow and gift tag makes even a tiny gift feel thoughtful and personal.

Here are some of my favorite Secret Santa ideas under $5–

1. Their favorite caffeinated drink or a $5 coffee shop gift card

Most people have a go-to Starbucks or Dunkin’ order (and this is exactly the kind of detail that pops up on a good Secret Santa questionnaire). A $5 gift card or pre-ordered drink feels thoughtful and personal without breaking the bank.

If your recipient prefers Gorgie, Celsius, Olipop, or another specialty drink, pair a can (or two) with a cute matching straw. I found a special edition Gorgie Cranberry Party Pop energy drink at Target and dressed it up with a green paper straw, chiffon ribbon, and one of these Secret Santa gift tags. It turned out so cute (see above)!

2. A small movie night treat

A bag of popcorn, microwave kettle corn, or movie theater candy paired with a $3 Amazon gift card (enough to rent a movie!) makes an adorable mini “movie night” kit. Just pop everything into a little cellophane bag, tie with a festive ribbon, and add a gift tag. So cute, super easy, and uber affordable!

3. Homemade cookies, fudge, or another festive baked treat

If you’re flying blind, food gifts are perfect for people you don’t know super well. Package cookies or fudge in a small treat box, tie with ribbon, and add a holiday tag. Easy, heartfelt, and universally appreciated.

4. Inexpensive homemade gifts

DIY wine charms, homemade shower steamers, simple stovetop simmer pot mixes, or even a tiny jar of homemade spice blend can make incredibly cute and personal Secret Santa gifts. These feel special without costing much and are especially appreciated by those who prefer homemade over store-bought.

5. Holiday treats from Trader Joe’s or Aldi

Both stores have amazing seasonal goodies– peppermint bark, mini gingerbread men, chocolate-covered snacks, and fun international treats. Cute packaging makes even a $3 treat gift-worthy, especially when paired with pretty ribbon and a cute Secret Santa gift tag.

6. A cute Christmas ornament

Choose something that aligns with their interests: pets, coffee, books, hobbies, or their favorite color scheme. If you don’t know the recipient well, you can’t go wrong with something seasonal and sparkly!

Secret Santa Gift Ideas under $25

Blogger Stephanie Ziajka designs a cute Christmas drink holder gift as one of her secret santa gift ideas under $25 on Diary of a Debutante

Most workplace and family Secret Santa exchanges fall into this range, and honestly, it’s the sweet spot. $25 gives you enough flexibility to choose something meaningful, practical, or fun without going overboard.

One of my favorite tricks? If your base gift is small, dress it up with thoughtful packaging. For example, I placed an energy drink (love Gorgie’s special edition Cranberry Party Pop cans– this isn’t a sponsored post by the way, I’m just a sucker for cute packaging!) into this adorable pink drink carrier, added a holiday tea towel, a small bouquet of premium faux flowers, and a velvet bow ornament and then attached a cute Secret Santa gift tag to the handle. It looked like a boutique holiday gift and still came in under $25.

Other Secret Santa gift ideas under $25 include–

1. Cozy socks or holiday blankets

Fuzzy socks are a universal crowd-pleaser. If your Secret Santa is a homebody, add hot cocoa mix, a set of mug toppers, and/or some specialty marshmallows for an easy themed gift.

2. Silk hair ties or clips

Silk hair ties are one of those small luxuries that feel premium without costing a lot. They’re gentle on hair, come in tons of cute colors, and are easy to match with someone’s personal style. And if your recipient prefers clips over ties, Teleties flat hair clips deserve all the hype. They’re the only ones I wear now, and they make an amazing Secret Santa gifts under $25.

3. Shower steamers or bath bombs

Store-bought shower steamers and bath bombs are perfect for someone who loves spa-like treats or needs a little stress relief. Throw in an inexpensive snail face mask and a pair of moisturizing gel gloves, too, if you have room in the budget!

4. Cute mugs or tumbler cups

Fill them with candy, tea bags, and/or mini treats to create a festive gift bundle. If you have room in the budget, throw in a month of Audible so they can enjoy an audiobook while they sip!

5. Wax warmers and melts

Seasonal scents (pine, cranberry, peppermint) are almost always a hit. If your Secret Santa has pets, Happy Wax pet scents are my holy grail wax melts. They smell amazing, are 100% safe for pets, and help maintain a calm and odor-free house.

Secret Santa Gift Ideas under $50

Blogger Stephanie Ziajka shares an Aperol Spritz gift idea as one of her favorite secret santa gift ideas for coworkers on Diary of a Debutante

If you’re participating in a Friendsmas exchange or a more generous family or office swap, the $50 category opens up all kinds of fun possibilities. This is my personal favorite price range because you can choose something your person will genuinely use all year long.

My #1 tip: use survey answers to build a themed gift (or full-blown gift basket) around something they love. It shows thoughtfulness and makes even simple gifts feel curated.

Here are a few of my favorite Secret Santa ideas under $50–

1. A festive cocktail (or mocktail!) kit

Cocktail kits make such fun Secret Santa gifts, especially when you tailor them to the recipient’s favorite drink. For example, if your recipient mentions loving Aperol Spritzes, a bottle of Aperol paired with a $25 gift card to buy champagne and fresh oranges is a guaranteed win. I love using these little hanging boxes to tuck in extra gifts, too!

For sangria lovers, fill a pretty pitcher with red wine, fresh citrus, and a cinnamon stick or two. Or create a Christmas Morning Mimosa Kit like this one with champagne and an assortment of fruit juices. Package everything in a basket, drink tub, or festive gift box, add a cute tag, and you’ve instantly created a holiday-ready drink experience they’ll love sharing (or not… no judgement!).

2. A luxurious candle

Brands like Anthropologie, Capri Blue, and Voluspa offer gorgeous mid-sized candles in this price range. Go with a seasonal scent for the holidays or choose something timeless and cozy like vanilla, amber, or sandalwood. Pair with an inexpensive blanket if you have extra room in the budget!

3. A cozy throw blanket

Think sherpa-lined blankets, chunky knit throws, or soft neutral fleece. A blanket is one of those gifts that feels indulgent without being overly personal (ie. perfect for office exchanges!). I gifted one of these Snuggle Sacs at our PEO Christmas gift exchange last year (and we own three ourselves), and it got stolen like five times. It’s essentially a Barefoot Dreams dupe for 1/10th of the cost, and the prints are even prettier.

4. A portable Bluetooth speaker or mini gadget

Small-but-useful gadgets like rechargeable lighters, handheld frothers, LED book lights, or compact speakers are always appreciated, especially in an office setting. They’re fun, practical, and get used all year long.

5. A self-care or beauty kit

Put together a simple spa-themed basket like this one with sheet masks, hand creams, hair masks, or body scrubs. I love throwing in these moisturizing gel gloves and fuzzy heel socks, too!

6. A hobby-themed upgrade

Check out their Secret Santa survey and lean into what they love– gardening tools, reading accessories, baking spices, craft supplies, or athletic gear. At the $50 price point, you can definitely find something new they’ll love, and this is where personalization can really shine.

If they’re a gardener, think upgraded pruning shears, pretty gardening gloves, or a set of heirloom seeds. For book lovers, consider a high-quality reading light, a cozy throw blanket, or even a custom book embosser. Bakers will appreciate specialty spice sets, silicone baking mats, and unique extracts they might not splurge on themselves. Crafters might love premium markers, needlepoint kits, or a new tool for their favorite hobby.

This kind of gift always feels meaningful because it shows you paid attention to who they are, not just what was on the shelf at Target. When in doubt, choose something that enhances a hobby they already enjoy, and you’ll almost always land on a winner.

How to Make Any Secret Santa Gift Feel Extra Special

Regardless of the price limit, thoughtful presentation makes a world of difference. Here are a few simple ways to elevate your Secret Santa gifting–

1. Use cute and cohesive gift wrap

Brown kraft paper, chiffon ribbon, and a pretty gift tag go a long way. Also, one of my favorite new trends is arranging items in an inexpensive drink carriers like these.

If you want printable, ready-to-use tags, the Secret Santa gift tags are pretty darn cute and match the drink carriers perfectly!

2. Let the survey guide you

This is the whole reason I love using a Secret Santa questionnaire. You can skip the guesswork and choose a gift that genuinely reflects their preferences.

3. Create themed bundles

Think “cozy night in,” “coffee lover,” “bookworm,” or even a “desk refresh.” And if you’re shopping for someone like me, feel free to pivot to “summertime spritz lover” or “crazy dog mom.” The sky’s the limit! Theme-based bundles make gifts feel more intentional and far more personalized. They’re a lot more fun to open, too!

Well, that’s all I’ve got for y’all today! I hope this post has at least halfway convinced you that Secret Santa exchanges don’t have to be stressful. With a thoughtful questionnaire, a cute gift tag, and a few creative ideas, you can put together a gift that feels personal, no matter the budget.

Also, if you’re organizing an exchange this year and want something cute and easy to use, I have a matching Secret Santa bundle (survey, sign-up sheet, and assignment cards) and coordinating gift tags available in my Etsy shop. They’re designed to make planning your exchange feel organized and festive. My shop is still growing, but if you enjoy holiday printables, I’d love for you to take a peek at the other designs I’ve created, as well!

Thanks so much for reading, y’all!
